Emely McConkey : Western Landscape Impressionist
Artist’s Statement
For me, it’s all about the excitement generated by light on the landscape and architecture.
My work interprets my personal reaction in blends of color. It’s definitely not reproducing reality, but rather translating the interplay of light, shadow and the subsequent transformation of color to summon the viewer’s attention and involve them in the painting.
Since a very young age I recall landscape settings which fascinated me because of the effects created by the light. I spent much of my early life exploring and relishing the outdoors. Born and raised until the age of six in Matanzas, Cuba, I enjoyed magical moments of twinkling sunlight filtering through leafy canopies, and interesting shadows dancing on glowing building facades. The bright, early morning white light of the tropics sifting through brilliant jewel tones of dense foliage and flowers are images carried in my mind forever!
This early bond I developed with the land has flowed through all my life. I completed an MS in Horticulture and Landscape Design and worked in these professions for over 20 years. Being a resident of the Southwest surrounds me in beauty and provides constant inspiration. It's truly a blessing to be able to live in such an exquisite area.
I have been painting for about 10 years. My journey started with watercolors; my current passion is pastels which I discovered in the summer of 2006. I love the immediacy and tactile quality of pastels. The majority of the time I am developing a painting, I am in direct contact with the media- no paintbrush, no tools-just my fingers against the surface. I enjoy the softness and disappearing edges pastels create, the blending and overlay of colors to develop depth and light in the image.
I paint what I know intimately and enjoy the most-the outdoors! Just recently I have branched out to painting dogs and cats, my other love after the outdoors.
